St. Peter's Mission Statement Connecting the world with God’s love
U.M.
ARMY
An incredible work force of senior high youth working with adult volunteers in teams that spend a week doing minor home repairs for the elderly and handicapped. Those in need are often referred by the United Way and the Texas Department of Human Services. Contact Debbie Johnson at djohnson72@comcast.net for more information or visit the U.M.
ARMY Website. The dates for 2010 are July 11-16.
Rainbow
Camp Rainbow Camp is a mission project for seventh- and eighth-grade students. It is a week-long Vacation Bible School program for the children in an apartment complex in south Houston. School supplies and Christmas gifts are collected for these children each year. Call Jason Trice, junior high coordinator, at (281) 492-031, ext. 322, for information. The dates for 2010 are July 26-30.
Habitat
for Humanity
A nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization, Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build quality, affordable housing. The houses are sold to those in need at no profit with no interest charged. Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individuals and organizations provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families must provide 300 hours of "sweat equity" labor to help build their homes. Their mortgage payments also help to build additional houses. Work is being done by individual church members throughout the year and group participation is planned accordingly (see Faith in Action Day).
Katy
Christian Ministries (KCM)
This is an important cooperative ministry in our community. KCM provides food and care to persons in need in our immediate area, including victims of family violence and sexual assault. St. Peter's participates in food drives and provides financial assistance to KCM.
Disaster Recovery
Teams of volunteers are sent out to do cleanup and rebuilding work for victims of hurricanes that have affected the Gulf Coast area. St. Peter’s has been active with Hurricane Rita recovery in the Beaumont-Port Arthur area and Hurricane Ike recovery in Galveston. We work through Disaster Recovery, an organization of the Texas Annual Conference. Day trips (and possibly weekend camps) are being scheduled on a monthly basis. Contact Jeff Campbell at (281) 647-0503 for more information.
Faith in Action Day
Faith in Action Day, which usually is held in October, provides a whole day of local mission opportunities for our church family. Activities may include Fleece Blankets, Beans and Rice in a Bag, Homeless Bags, Health Kits, Birthday Baskets for KCM, Disaster Recovery, and Habitat for Humanity. The date for 2010 is October 23.
International Missions
St. Peter’s is involved with a United Methodist church and school at Hempstead, Jamaica, with monetary support plus yearly trips by our high school seniors to do work and bring supplies during Spring Break. Summer trips also have been scheduled.
Other Local Mission Work
St. Peter’s provides monetary and material support for local area mission ministries such as:
Mission Milby (Servants of Christ United Methodist Church on southeast side of Houston). We assist in prom gowns and Vacation Bible School.
New Birth Ministries (halfway house for women putting their lives back together in Brookshire, Texas).
